Qld: Seniors units infested with legionnaire's

Legionella bacteria have been found in the hot water systems of nine out of 10 unitsin a Brisbane public housing block where a victim of legionnaires' disease lived.

Queensland Housing Minister ROBERT SCHWARTEN says the 10 other elderly residents ofthe block in bayside suburban Wynnum have been evacuated and checked by doctors.

Mr SCHWARTEN says none of them show any trace of legionnaires.

He says a task force involving his department and Queensland Health has been set upto investigate the matter.

The 60-year-old male victim died in hospital about three weeks ago.

Mr SCHWARTEN says he's been told the temperatures of hot water systems used by theelderly are often turned down to avoid scalding accidents, and this can create ideal breedingconditions for legionella bacteria.
