Qld: Local govts consider $150 fines for littering
Queensland local government leaders are considering a proposal to impose $150 fineson people who throw cigarette butts and other rubbish out of car windows.
The motion by the Gold Coast City Council will be put before the Local Government Associationof Queensland annual conference in Cairns next week.
LGAQ chief executive GREG HALLAM says the idea of a hefty fine for carelessly discardedhas widespread support.
At present, local government officers who spot people throwing litter from cars muststop the vehicle, interview the driver and issue an infringement notice.
Under the new plan, the fines could be mailed out in the same way as speed camera tickets.
Motoring organisation the RACQ says several aspects of the plan need to be examined closely.
