Fed: New regulations for vehicle emissions announced
Exhaust fumes from new cars, trucks and buses sold in Australia from 2002 will be up
to 70 per cent cleaner under new emission standards.
The standards mirror those in place in Europe, setting maximum levels of pollutants
such as fine particles, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
The federal government says nitrogen oxide emission rates for medium to heavy duty
trucks will drop by 40 per cent after 2002 and 50 per cent after 2006.
Particle emissions will drop by 70 per cent and 90 per cent respectively.
Transport and Regional Services Minister JOHN ANDERSON says the standards will improve
air quality for all Australians, especially city-dwellers.
He says the federal government is also working with states and territories to reduce
emissions for vehicles already on the road.
