Trucking companies trying to beat price increases helped boost U.S. heavy-duty truck sales last year.
Sales of Class 8 trucks - the biggest trucks on the road - rose 12.3 percent over 2005. And 2006 truck sales in classes 4-8 were up 8.4 percent over the same period the previous year.
"Large fleet operators are trying to avoid a $7,000 to $12,000 price per truck increase,'' said Tim Kraus, CEO of the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association. Kraus was referring to new government rules that require diesel engines to meet stricter emission standards.
